The Steelhead Redtag is a simple redtag nymph pattern using a stainless steel bead.
The tying thread for this pattern is red 140d. The red tag is died-red rabbit guard hair, the body is of natural pheasant tail and the hackle is blonde tipped black rooster.
I use a stainless steel bead for its weight characteristics: stainless steel is denser than brass but less dense than tungsten.
There is also an interesting price consideration as stainless steel beads are not intended for fly-tying but for jewellery making and so are considerably cheaper. A nice bonus.
The Steehead Redtag nymph is an effective pattern for most species in our rivers but mostly fished when targetting Chub, Barbel and Tench.
